Declaring love and commitment to another person, amongst family and friends, or even in front of a couple of witnesses is a most beautiful thing to do. In the 21st century, traditional ways of doing this are not always suited to our own way of expressing our love.

The first “hurdle” many couples face is the law. Details of what constitutes a legal marriage and how to incorporate that into a very personal ceremony is explained on our “Marriage the Legal stuff” pages. Of course more and more couples are choosing to form relationships that do not require legal registration, but this doesn’t mean they can’t have a ceremony of their choosing to symbolise and recognise their commitment amongst family and friends, indeed its perfectly possible to have both a legal ceremony AND a public ceremony of YOUR choice.

The second “hurdle” is relating venue to ceremony. If couples wish to marry in Church, or another faith building, it is often possible that the service will combine a celebration of their marriage AND legal registration. If a couple chooses to marry in a licensed venue, there will be the option of having the marriage legally registered by the state. BUT there are strings attached. In Church you will have to fulfil residence or connection requirements, the Priest or Minister may refuse to marry you if you have been married before. Its certainly a refusal if you are a same sex couple , and they will not entertain even blessing a relationship of more than two people ! The service will have space for some of your own music and reading choices (subject to the approval of the vicar) , but beyond that it is fixed and inflexible. In a licensed venue the same is true. The service is quite short, and whilst it can have space for personal additions, none of these can have a spiritual or religious aspect.
